숙어의 관용적 표현 5

HEAD

"all in your head" --- Don't be silly. Nobody is trying to harm you.  It's all in your head! 실제 현실이 아닌 상상에 의한 것이라고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"bite someone's head off" --- I worked 10 hours a day all week and my boss bit my head off for not doing my share of the work! 공정하지 못 한 상대방을 강력하게 비판하는경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"can't make head or tail of" --- Amy's message was so confusing. I couldn't make head or tail of it! 어떤 거에 대해서 이해할 수 없을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"come to a head" --- The problem came to a head yesterday when rioting broke out in the streets. 문제나 어려움에 어떤 행동에 의해 발생한 경우라고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"drum something into someone's head" --- When we were kids at school, multiplication tables were drummed into our heads.

"bang your head against brick wall" --- I've been banging my head against a brick wall trying to explain the internet to my grandmother. 몇 번의 실패한 시도에도 불구하고 헛된 시도를 계속하고 무언가를 성취할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have your head in the clouds" ---He doesn't listen to the teacher - he's got his head in the clouds all the time! 너무 본인의 생각에 집중하여 주위에 신경을 쓰지 못하는 경우에 표현입니다.

"(want someone's) head on a platter" ---He was so angry when he read the article about his family that he wanted the journalist's head on a platter. 누군가가 당신을 해할려고 하여 무척 화를 나게 한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(be) head and shoulders above" --- The award winner was head and shoulders above the others. 그들은 그룹의 나머지들보다 훨씬 나은 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"old head on young shoulders" --- When she heard Emily warning her little brother to stay out of trouble, her mother thought: "That's an old head on young shoulders. 아이나 젊은 사람이 자신의 나이에 걸맞지 않게 올드패션의 말이나 표현을 할때 사용합니다.

"(have your) head screwed on" --- Don't worry about him. He's adventurous but he's got his head screwed on. 현명하고 현실적인 사람이라고 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) head start" --- Bringing detailed maps of the area gave us a head start over the others in the treasure hunt.  더 빨리 성장하고 성공할 수있는 더 큰 기회를 가질 수있는 이점이 있다고 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다..

"(be/fall) head over heels in love" --- Tony's only interest at the moment is Maria. He's head over heels in love with her! 누군가와 열정적으로 사랑에 빠진 경웨 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hit the nail on the head" --- You hit the nail on the head when you said Mark had money problems. He's lost his job! 어떤 일에  전적으로 옳고 문제나 상황에 따라 정확한 원인을 추측하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"in over your head" --- I agreed to organise the festival, but I quickly realized that I was in over my head! 다루기 어려운 문제가 관련이 된 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep head above water" --- Business has been slow, but we've managed to keep our head above water. 예를 들어 소규모 사업에서 빚으로 부터 생존하기 노력하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep a level head" --- All through the hijacking the pilot kept a level head. 힘들고 스트레스를 받는대도 불구하고 조용하고 침착한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"off the top of your head' --- How much do you think it will cost?" "Off the top of my head I'd say around $1000. 심사숙고없이 즉흥적으로 반응하는 경우를 의미하며 정확하지 않을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put your head on the block" --- Jenny asked me to recommend her son for the job, but I'm not putting my head on the block for someone I hardly know. 본인 스스로 일이 잘 못 되어 평판이나 직업을 잃을 위험이 있는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"swelled/swollen head" --- Larry's promotion has given him a swelled/swollen head! 일반적으로 최근의 성공으로 인해 자랑 스럽거나 자만해졌을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"wet the baby's head" --- When his first child was born, Tom invited his colleagues to a local bar to wet the baby's head. 아이의 생일을 축하하기 위해 술을 먹을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

HERAT

"(a) change of heart" --- He was against charity, but he had a change of heart when he saw the plight of the homeless.  본인의 느낌이나 태도를 좀 더 친근감있게 하거나 협조하는 방량으로 바꾸는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(to your) heart's content" --- When my parents are away, I can watch television to my heart's content. 원하는 만큼 오랫동안 그리고 많이 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(have your) heart in your mouth" --- Emma had her heart in her mouth when she saw her two-year-old son standing in front of the open window. 불편하거나 위험한 상황때문에 긴장되고 신경이 쓰이는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(have your) heart in the right place" --- The old lady's cake wasn't wonderful but she's got her heart in the right place. 결과가 좋지 않더라도 상냥한 느낌과 좋은 목적을 가진 경우에 사용햐는 표현입니다.

"(have your) heart set on something" --- From an early age Tiger had his heart set on becoming a professional golfer. 어떤 것을 굉장히 원할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(have a) heart of stone" --- She's not the person to go to if you've got problems - she's got a heart of stone. 다른 사람을 동정하거나 이해함이 없는 냉열한 사람을 사람을 지칭할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(the) heart of the matter" --- We need to get to the heart of the matter - what caused the accident? 상황의 한 단면이나 가장 중요한 부분에 대해 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(wear your) heart on sleeve" --- You could see she was hurt - she wears her heart on her sleeve. 타인이 당신의 느낌이나 감정을  보는 것을 허용할때 사용합니다.

"(someone's) heart misses a beat" --- When the lights suddenly went out, my heart missed a beat. 갑자기 공포나 흥분의 기분을 느낄때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(someone's) heart sinks" --- My heart sank when I saw the amount of work waiting for me. 기분이 안 좋거나 낙담했을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put your heart into something" --- Paul was determined to make a success of the project. He put his heart and soul into it. 매우 의욕적이며 에너지와 노력을 기울릴때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"tug at the heartstrings" --- The hospital's plea for donors tugged at the heartstrings of millions of viewers. 엄청난 동정과 슬픔을 야기하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

LUNGS

"at the top of one's lungs" --- The place was so noisy that I had to shout at the top of my lungs to be heard. 소리를 지를 수 있을 만큼 크게 내는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

KNEES

"bee's knees" --- If you say "Chloe thinks she's the bee's knees" you mean that Chloe has a high opinion of herself. 상대방에 대해서 매우 좋게 생각할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"on its knees / bring to its knees" --- The civil war brought the country to its knees. 기구나 국가가 매우 약한 상태에 있을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"knee-high to a grasshopper" --- Last time I saw you, you were knee-high to a grasshopper. 작은 아이나 어린이를 언급할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"weak at the knees" --- The shock of the announcement make me go weak at the knees. 순간적으로 감정이나 병 또는 공포로 인해 서 있을 수가 없을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

LEGS

"not have a leg to stand on" --- Three people testified against him. He didn't have a leg to stand on. 본이니 한 말을 증명할 수 없을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"on one's last legs" --- I was so sick that I felt as though I was on my last legs. 곧 죽음을 앞둔 상태이거나 매우 약해 있을때 쓰는 관용적 표현입니다.

"pull (someone's) leg" --- Of course I'm not going to buy a sports car. I was just pulling your leg. 진실이 아닌 것을 가지고 상대방을 괴롭히는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put your pants on one leg at a time" --- Don't be scared to speak to him. He puts his pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us. 상대방이 우리와 다르지 않고 평범한 사람이라고 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have sea legs / find your sea legs" --- It takes a while in a new job to find your sea legs. 움직이는 배에서 걷는 것처럼 새로운 환경에 잘 적응하는 능력이 있을때 사용하는 표현입니다.
