숙어의 관용적 표현 7

NECK

"neck and neck" --- At the moment the two teams are neck and neck for the Word Cup. 경기나 경연에서 두 팀이 막상막하의 실력으로 누가 이길지 말하기 힘든 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) millstone around your neck" --- The money he borrowed became a millstone around his neck.  문제나 책임감이 결국에는 걱정의 요인이나 의무가 되는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) pain in the neck" --- She's a pain in the neck the way she keeps complaining. 누군가거 무척 신경쓰이게 하거나 귀찮게 하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"stick one's neck out" --- Julie stuck her neck out and said that the sales target would be impossible to reach without extra staff. 다른 사람들이 하기 두려워하는 말이나 행동을 함으로써 자신에게 주의를 환기시키는 경에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"a yoke around one's neck" --- When Matt lost his job, the repayments on the house became a yoke around his neck. 의무, 약속 또는 금지가 심적 부담이 되는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

 

THROAT

"at each other's throats" --- The two candidates for the election are constantly at each other's throats. 두 사람이 항상 논쟁을 하거나 싸우는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"cut your own throat" --- Tony has already missed a lot of classes. He's cutting his own throat. 스스로 앞으로 올 기회를 망치거나 실패한 원인이 되는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"jump down someone's throat" --- When I said the instructions were not very clear, she jumped down my throat.  갑자기 매우 화를 내며 소리 치기 시작하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"ram (something) down someone's throat" --- I encourage him to learn English but I can't ram it down his throat. 상대방의 의지에 반하여 어떤 것을  받아드리도록 강제하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"stick in one's throat(or craw)" --- The way he treats women really sticks in my throat. 받아들이기가 매우 어렵고 화가 나거나 분개하게 만드는 령우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

NOSE

"nose out of joint" --- When he discovered he wasn't on the invitation list, that really put his nose out of joint. 어떤 일이 당신을 신경쓰게 하거나 해를 끼치는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"follow your nose" --- The station is at the end of the road - just follow your nose. 곧바로 앞으로 가는 경우를 표현할때 쓰이거나 본능에 따라 사는 경우에 쓰이는 표현입니다.

"keep your nose clean" --- He spent a term in prison a few years ago but he's kept his nose clean ever since. 문제을 잘 피하고 잘 지내는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"keep nose to the grindstone" --- Sarah was so determined to get into the college of her choice that she kept her nose to the grindstone all year. 집중해서 열심히 공부를 하거나 일을 하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"led by the nose" --- Jack has always been led by the nose by his mother.  원하는것을 정확히 하게 만드는 그룹이나 사람에 의해 종속되거나 지배되는경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"look down one's nose: --- Intellectuals often look down their noses at amusement parks and such. 사람이나 물건이 열등하다고 할때 쓰는 표현입니다.

"no skin off someone's nose" --- It's no skin off my nose if he doesn't accept the invitation - I don't care one way or another. 어떤 일이 일어나도 개의치 않는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"turn up one's nose" --- He's out of work, but he turns up his nose at any job he's offered. 본인에게 좋지 않다고 판단되어 거절하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"win by a nose" --- One second ahead of the others, he won by a nose. 간발의 차이로 승리한 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

 

SHOULDER(S)

"a chip on the shoulder" --- ou’ve got a chip on your shoulder if you think Dustin has something against you. He’s just a serious person; he never smiles at anyone. 부당한 대우를 받고 있다고 느끼기 때문에 분개하는데 특히 출신성분이나 성별 또는 인종때문에 받는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"give someone the cold shoulder" --- After giving my opinion, he gave me the cold shoulder. 의도적으로 무시하는 경우에 쓰이는 표현입니다.

"old head on young shoulders" --- When she heard Emily warning her little brother to stay out of trouble, her mother thought: "That's an old head on young shoulders. 어린이나 젊은 사람이 오래된 사람들의 표햔을 사용할때 쓰는 관용적 표현입니다.

"put your shoulder to the wheel" --- We'll have to put our shoulders to the wheel to get the store ready for the opening day. 어려운 일에 많은 노력을 기울이기 시작한다 라고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"rub shoulders" --- In her job in public relations, Jenny sometimes rubs shoulders with famous people. 부자나 유명한 사람과 만나거나 이야기를 할 수 있는 기회를 가질 기회를 가졌을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) shoulder to cry on" --- You can call me any time if you need a shoulder to cry on. 본인이 우울할때 위로와 동정을 주며 당신의 문제에 대해서 들어줄 수 있는 사람과 대화가 필요하다고 할때 쓰는 관용적 표현입니다.

"shoulder surfing" --- Therefore, it would be difficult for a shoulder-surfing adversary to identify the user's actual password. 컴퓨터, 금전출납기, 전자기기를 사용하는 사람 어깨 너머로 개인정보를 획득하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

SKIN

"all skin and bone" --- After trekking in the Himalayas, he was all skin and bone. 뼈만 남은 것처럼 앙상한 몸 상태를  표현할때  사용합니다.

"by the skin of your teeth" --- Leo passed the driving test by the skin of his teeth. 어떤 것을 취득하거나  무엇을 하기 위해 경영을 했지만 실패하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"jump out of one's skin" --- Jane nearly jumped out of her skin when the horse put its head through the kitchen window. 엄청 놀라고충격을 받는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"more than one way to skin a cat" --- How about trying a different method? There's more than one way to skin a cat you know. 어떤 목적을 달성하는 방법을 다양하다는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"(no) skin off one's nose" --- It's no skin off my nose if he doesn't accept the invitation - I don't care one way or another. 무슨 일이 있어도 상관 없는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"skin someone alive" --- If that kid damages my car again, I'll skin him alive. 누군가를 심각하게 처벌 할 것을 표현하는 경우입니다.

"(put) skin in the game" --- I got good news today. Apparently a serious investor is willing to put skin in the game. 상당한 투자나 재정적 약속을 함으로써 회사에 대한 자신감을 보여주는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

SPINE

"(send) a shiver down someone's spine" --- That song always sends a shiver down my spine. 어떤 것이 불안하거나 긴장하거나 흥분하게 만드는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다..
