TOOTH - TEETH

"by the skin of one's teeth" --- The traffic was so heavy I thought I'd miss the train, but I caught it by the skin of my teeth. 거의 실패할 뻔 했으나 성공했을 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"grit your teeth" --- To reach safety I had to grit my teeth and wade through the mud. 매우 어려운 상태임에도 불구하고 뭔가를 하기로 마음을 먹었을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"lie through your teeth" --- I saw him breaking the window. If he denies it, he's lying through his teeth. 본인의 말하는 것이 완전히 거짓임을 알고 공개적이고 뻔뻔스럽게 거짓말을 하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"like pulling teeth" --- Getting him to talk about his job was like pulling teeth. 누군가로부처 정보를 얻어 내는 것처럼 어떤 것을 획득하기가 매우 어려운 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"sink one's teeth into (something)" --- When Julie got promoted, she immediately sank her teeth into her new job. 어떤 일을 할때 열정과 열의를 가지고 해야 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(have a) sweet tooth" --- My mother will be delighted if you bring her chocolates - she's got a sweet tooth. 설탕, 페이스트리, 초콜릿 등과 같은 단 것을 먹는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다..

"teeth chattering" ---Was I cold? My teeth were chattering. 매우 춥다고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"teething problems" --- We had some teething problems when we first opened the bookshop, but now everything is okay. 활동이나 프로젝트의 초기 단계에서 발생하는 어려움을 표현할때 사용합니다.

 

TONGUE

"bite your tongue" --- Sam decided to bite his tongue rather than get into an argument. 자신의 진정한 생각을 말하는 것을 스스로 중지하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"get your tongue round something" --- She's from the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. Try getting your tongue round that.  어려운 단어나 관용구를 발음할 수 있는 능력이 있을때 쓰는 표현입니다.

"give the (rough) edge of your tongue" --- My boss was so angry that I really got the rough edge of his tongue. 다른 사람을 시하게 꾸짖거나 상대방에게 무례하고 심하게 마을 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hold your tongue" ---The party was supposed to be a surprise, but unfortunately the little boy couldn't hold his tongue.아무런 말없이 조용히 머무는 경우를 표현할때 사용합니다.

"keep a civil tongue" --- Don't speak so rudely! You must learn to keep a civil tongue in all circumstances.  정중하게 표현할때 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"(a) slip of the tongue" --- Did I say 'blow down'? - Sorry, I meant 'slow down' - that was a slip of the tongue. 말할때 표현상 작은 실수나 잘못함을 표현할때 사용합니다.

"on the tip of your tongue" --- What's that actor's name? I know it ... it's on the tip of my tongue. 단어나 대답이 혀 끝에 있다고 말하는 것은 당신이 그것을 알고 있다고 확신하지만 찾기가 어렵다는 것을 의미하는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"tongue in cheek" --- Peter's remark was taken more seriously than intended. It was supposed to be tongue in cheek. 진지하게 받아 드리지 말고 농담이나 재미로 받아 드리라는 의미로 표현할때 사용합니다.

"tongue-lashing" --- The teacher gave Jeremy a tongue-lashing when arrived late for school. 누군가를 심하게 호통칠때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"tongue-tied" --- At the start of the interview I was completely tongue-tied. 당황하거나 창피해서 잘 표현하지 못하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"tongues are wagging / set tongues wagging" --- The photograph of the couple that appeared in a magazine really set tongues wagging. 사람들이 다른 삶의 사생활에 대해서 루머나 가십을 시자가하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

Idioms and Idiomatic Expressions "Alphabet A"

"to the best of one's ability" --- I felt nervous all through the interview, but I replied to the best of my ability. 어떤 것을 할 수 있을 가능성뿐만 아니라 실제로 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"about turn/about face" --- The ambassador's recent declarations indicate an about turn in foreign policy. 이 것은 의견이나 정책의 완전한 변경을 의미할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"above and beyond the call of duty" --- The fire-fighter received a medal for his action which went above and beyond the call of duty. 일에서 일반적으로 요구되거나 예상되는 것보다 더 큰 용기나 노력을 보여줄때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"above board" --- There are not secret negotiations. Our dealings have always been above board. 상황이나 사업이 개방적이고 정직하며 합법적이라고 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"accidentally on purpose" --- I accidentally-on-purpose erased his email address so I couldn't contact him again. 의도적으로 어떤 일을했지만 사고 인 척하면 의도적으로 실수로 한 것이라고 말할때 사용합니다.

"more by accident than (by) design" --- I became an interpreter more by accident than design; nobody else could speak the language of the refugees. 어떤 일이 계획한 것 보다  의도치 않게 발생하는 것은 예정에 없이 발생한다고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"no accounting for taste" --- She fell in love with a guy who is short, fat, bald and poor ... there's no accounting for taste. 다른 사람의 좋아하는 것과 싫어하는 것에 대해서 놀라움을 표현할때 사용합니다.

"ace a test" --- Maria's parents said she could go to the party if she aced her English test. 시럼이나 테스트에서 고득점을 획득했을때 사용하는 표현입니다.
