ALTHOUGH - DESPITE

although / despite - in spite of

in spite of, despite, although는 모두 대비를 나타내는 데 사용되며 같은 의미로 사용됩니다. 유일한 차이점은 사용 방법입니다.

1. in spite of와  despite는 명사 또는 대명사 앞에 배치됩니다.
We had a great time in spite of the rain.
We had a great time despite the rain.
Despite studying very hard, he still didn’t pass the exam. ‘studying’은 동사‘study’의 명사형입니다

2. despite에는 of가 없습니다.
Despite the rough weather they still set sail. NOT, Despite of the bad weather...

3. although은 주어와 동사 앞에 사용됩니다.
We had a great time although it rained.
Although he studied very hard, he still didn’t pass the exam.

4. the fact that이라는 문구 앞에 in spite of와 depite를 사용하면 주어와 동사와 함께 사용할 수 있습니다.
In spite of the fact that he studied very hard, he still didn’t pass the exam.
Despite the fact that it rained we still had a great time.

5. even though는 although와 같은 방식으로 사용할 수 있습니다. 대부분의 원어민에게 even though은 although보다 약간 더 강합니다.
Even though we were in a terrible hotel, we had a great time.
