공식 언어와 비공식 언어는 다른 용도로 사용됩니다. 어조, 단어 선택 및 단어 조합 방식은 두 스타일에 따라 다릅니다. 공식 언어는 비공식 언어보다 덜 친밀하고 딱딱합니다. 연구 보고서와 같은 전문적 또는 학문적 목적으로 글을 쓸 때 사용하거나 방송국의 아나운서들이 사용합니다. 공식 언어는 구어체, 축약형 또는 'I' 또는 'We'와 같은 1인칭 대명사를 사용하지 않습니다.

비공식적인 언어는 더 캐주얼하고 즉흥적입니다. 친구나 가족과 일상적인 대화로 소통할 때 사용합니다. 개인 이메일, 문자 메시지 및 일부 비즈니스 서신을 작성할 때 사용됩니다. 비공식 언어의 어조는 공식 언어보다 더 부드럽고 익숙한 구어체입니다.
