숙어의 관용적 표현 6

HEELS

"Achilles heel" --- He's extremely intelligent, but his inability to speak in public is his Achilles heel.  다른 부분은 모두 좋으나 가장 취역한 약점을 말하며 이로 인해 실패하거나 추락할 수 있을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"bring someone to heel" --- The boy had always behaved badly, but the new headmaster managed to bring him to heel. 누군가에게 규율있게 행동하도록 강요하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"cool one's heels" --- After rushing to be on time for my appointment, I was left to cool my heels in the waiting room for an hour. 상대방이 당신을 계속해서 기다리고 있을때 사용합니다.

"dig in your heels" --- My grandfather dug in his heels and refused to move to an apartment. 누군가가 그렇게하도록 설득하지만 거부할때 사용하는 표현입니다

"hairy at the heel" --- Rumour has it that the owner of the club is a bit hairy at the heel. 믿을 수 없거나 심지어 위험하다고 생각할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

TOES

"dip one's toes in the water" --- It will be a new experience for me, but I can't wait to dip my toes in the water. 처음으로 영역을 개척하는 경우나 익숙하지 않은 것을 처음으로 시작하는 경우를 나타날때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep someone on their toes" --- The manager never announces his visits beforehand. That's his way of keeping the personnel on their toes. 주의를 주거나 언제든지 행동을 할 수 있는 준비상태를 표현할때 사용합니다.

"step/tread on someone's toes" --- I could offer some advice but I'm afraid of stepping on someone's toes. 누군가 어떤 상황에 개입하여 짜증나거나 괴롭히는 것은 그들의 책임이라고 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

LIPS

"lip service" ---In spite of promising equal pay for women, the management is suspected of paying lip service to the promotion of women's rights.  말로 승인하고 지원한다고 했지만 실제로 이뤄지지 않은 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"stiff upper lip" --- When she heard the bad news, she kept a stiff upper lip. 감정(느낌)이 있지만 그것을 남이 보지 않도록 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(my) lips are sealed" --- I promise I won't tell anyone. My lips are sealed. 비밀을 지키기 위해 입을 다물고 있는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"smack/lick one's lips" --- They were smacking their lips at the idea of the money they were going to make. 어떤 일이 일어나길 바라거나 아떤 일에 흥분할 정도로 좋다는 것을 보여줄때 사용하는 표현입니다/

 

MOUTH

"all mouth and no trousers" --- He keeps saying he's going to resign and travel around the world, but he's all mouth and no trousers. 실제로 하지 않으면서 말로만 엄청 떠들어 대는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"butter wouldn't melt in (someone's) mouth" --- The boy who stole the purse looked as if butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. 완전히 결백 해 보이지만 용납 할 수없는 일을 할 수 있다는 뜻으로 표현할때 사용합니다.

"down in the mouth" --- You look a bit down in the mouth. What's the matter? 우울하거나 낙담하거나 행북해 보이지 않을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"foam at the mouth" --- The director was foaming at the mouth when he saw a picture of his children in the newspaper. 어떤 일에 아주 화가 난 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"live from hand to mouth" --- Most families in that area live from hand to mouth. 필수품을 사는 정도의 돈을 벌기 때문에 전혀 저축을 못하는 경우를 표현합니다.

"make one's mouth water" --- hat delicious smell from the kitchen is making my mouth water.  음식이 보기도 먹음빅하고 냄새도 아주 좋은 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put your money where your mouth is" --- If people are really interested in helping the underprivileged, they should put their money where their mouth is. 관심이 있을 뿐 아니라 믿음이 있어 재정적인 지원도 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"take words out of mouth" --- I entirely agree with you. You took the words out of my mouth. 누군가가 말을 할려고 했던 말을 그대로 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"say a mouthful" --- The customer said a mouthful when he gave the reason for his dissatisfaction. 중요하거나 긴 발언을 한 마디로 표현할때 사용합니다.
