숙어의 관용적 표현 3

 

FEET
"feet of clay" --- No one is perfect. Many successful people have feet of clay. 칭찬받는 사람일지라도 단점과 약점 그리고 실수가 있다는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"back on your fee" --- My grandmother had a bad 'flu, but she's back on her feet again. 병이나 사고로부터 몸이 완치된 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
cut the ground from under someone's feet" --- When we launched the new product, we cut the ground from under our competitors' feet. 어떤 것을 하게 되면 계획이 탄로나거나 자신의 위치가 약해지게 되는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"drag one's feet" --- The government is dragging it's feet on measures to reduce pollution. 당신에게 매우 중요한 결정을 불필요하게 지연하고 있다고 생각할 때 사용하는 표현입니다.
"find one's feet" --- Our new trainee is beginning to find his feet. 무엇을 해야 할지 배우며 자신감이 생기는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"get cold feet" --- I wanted to enter the competition but at the last minute I got cold feet. 무언가를 할려고 할때 할지 하지 말아야 할지 주저하믐 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"get one's feet wet" --- It will be a totally new experience for me but I can't wait to get my feet wet. (=dip your toes in the water) 같은 의미로 쓰이는 body idiom입니다. 새로운 것이나 익숙하지 않은 것 또는 새로운 영역을 탐험하고자 할때 사용합니다.
"have itchy feet" --- Scott never stays long anywhere. He's got itchy feet. 한 곳에 머무르지 못하고 자주 움직이는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"have the world at your feet" --- The talented young actress has the world at her feet. 세상에서 크게 성공하거나 칭찬을 받는 경우에 표현입니다.
"keep your feet on the ground" --- Success hasn't changed him. He has always kept his feet on the ground. 성공했음에도 불구하고 하던 일을 계속하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"land on your feet" --- Don't worry about Bob. He always lands on his feet. 사업의 실패나 병 또는 잃어버린 것에 대한 어려움으로부터 빠르게 회복할때 사용하는 표현입니다.
"pull the rug from under someone's feet" --- When Andy's mother stopped sending him money, she pulled the rug from under his feet and forced him to find a job. 예기치 않게 갑작스럽게 지원과 도움이 사라진 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"regain one's feet" --- John helped his father to regain his feet when he tripped on the steps. 넘어지거나 넘어진 후 다시 일어서는 경우나 어려운 시절이 지난 후 재정적으로 해결된 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"rushed off your feet" --- I'd love to have lunch with you but I'm rushed off my feet at work. 매우 바쁠때 사용하는 표현입니다.
"stand on your own two feet" --- When young peope leave home, they learn to stand on their own two feet. 스스로 독립하여 더 이상 다른 사람의 도움이 필요하지 않을때 사용하는 표현입니다.
"think on one's feet" --- Good lawyers need to be able to think on their feet when pleading a case. 사전에 계획이나 생각없이 훌류한 결정을 내리거나 능력이 있는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
"have two left feet" --- I'm afraid I'm a bad dancer! I've got two left feet. 움직이는 것이 서툴거나 어색한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

FOOT

"my foot" --- He said he had a summer home? My foot! I doubt if he owns a tent. '세상에나' 말을 듣고 믿을 수가 없을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have/get a foot in the door" --- With today's unemployment, it's difficult to get a foot in the door in any profession.  처음에는 작게 시작했지만 성공적인 결과를 얻었으며 미래가 밝다는 뜻으로 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have one foot in the grave" --- It's no use talking to the owner. The poor man has one foot in the grave. 나이가 많고 병이 깊어 죽음을 앞에 둔 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put one's best foot forward" --- It's a long way to the station but if I put my best foot forward I should catch the next train. 할수 있는 한 신속하게 해야 할 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"put one's foot down" --- The child wanted to sleep on the sofa, but his father put his foot down and made him go to bed. 어떤 일이 일어나지 않도록 권한을 행사해야 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put one's foot in one's mouth" --- She really put her foot in her mouth when she mentioned the housewarming party - Andy hadn't been invited. 당신의 말과 행동으로 타인에게 공격적이고 당황시키며 창피하게 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"get off(start off) right/wrong foot" --- I was looking forward to working with Anna but we seem to have started off on the wrong foot. 새로운 관계가 잘될지 안될지 모를 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"the shoe is on the other foot" --- I used to advise my children to eat healthy food, but now that my daughter is a nutritionist, the shoe is on the other foot. 환경이 바뀐 경우 또는 과거의 행동과 지금하는 행동이 정반대로 하는 경우에 사용합니다.

"shoot yourself in the foot" --- When Julie was asked at the interview if she had any weaknesses, she really shot herself in the foot the way she answered. 자신이 한 행동이나 말로 인해 본인이 피해를 입는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"get a foothold" --- The contract got the firm a foothold in the local administration. 비즈니스, 직업 또는 조직에서 자신의 지위를 확보한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"footloose and fancy free" --- John will never get married. He says he prefers to be footloose and fancy free. 어떤 종류의 책임과 약속도 거의 없으며 원하는대로 자유롭게 할 수 있는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

FINGERS

"five-finger discount" --- How could he afford that watch? Who knows - perhaps with a five-finger discount? 돈을 지불하지 않고 취하는 것 다시 말해서 훔친 것 같다고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"get your fingers burnt" --- He got his fingers burnt so badly in the last elections that he decided to withdraw from politics. 성공하지 못한 결과에 고통스러워 다시 하기를 꺼리는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hang on by the fingernails" --- The restaurant is losing more and more customers; the owner is just hanging on by the fingernails. 아주 힘든 환경속에서 지속적으로 일을 진행하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have a finger in every pie" --- For information about the activities in this town, you should talk to John Brown.  He's got a finger in every pie. 모든 경우에 다 관여하고 간섭하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep your fingers crossed" --- I'm doing my driving test tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me. 원하는 대로 이뤄지길 바랄때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep your finger on the pulse" --- A successful investor keeps his finger on the pulse of international business. 최근의 사건이나 개발상황에 대해서 지속적으로 알고 있는 상황에 대한 표현입니다

"not lift a finger" --- Many people saw the boy falling off his bike but not one of them lifted a finger. 도움이 필요한 경우인데도 불구하고 아무도  하지 않는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put a finger on something" --- The atmosphere at the meeting was strange, but Marie couldn't put a finger on the cause of it. 어떤 것의 해결방법이나 문제의 원인을 알고 있는 것처럼 정의하고 이해할 수 있는 있다면 이런 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"put something on the long finger" --- She says she intends to go back to college, but she keeps putting it on the long finger. 무기한 연기를 할 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"all fingers and thumbs" --- Would you mind wrapping this for me? I'm all fingers and thumbs. 어색하고 서투르고 일을 잘못하는 경우에 사용합니다.

"let slip through fingers" --- He should have accepted the job when it was offered. He let the opportunity slip through his fingers. 어떤 것을 얻게 되지 말지 어째튼 좋은 기회라고 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have sticky fingers" --- Items have been disappearing from the stock recently. Do any of the employees have sticky fingers? 훔치려는 경향이 있다는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"works your fingers to the bone" --- He deserves his success; he worked his fingers to the bone when he started the business. 열심히 일하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다
