숙어의 관용적 표현 4

KNUCKLE(S)

"knuckle down" --- If you want to succeed, you'll have to knuckle down to some serious work.  진지하게 일을 시작하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"near the knuckle" --- Some of his jokes are a bit near the knuckle. 특정한 그룹에 공격적이거나 특히 성적인 접근이 받아 들이기 어려운 한계에 다달았을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"rap someone on the knuckles" --- Andy got a rap on the knuckles for leaving the kitchen in a mess. 심한 것은 아니지만 다시 하지 못하게 벌이나 책망을 받는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

THUMB

"all thumbs / all fingers and thumbs" --- Would you mind wrapping this for me? I'm all fingers and thumbs. 일을 어색하고 서툴러서 잘못하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"stick out like a sore thumb" ---The modern building sticks out like a sore thumb among the old houses. 좋지 않다는 것이 명백하고 확실히 보이는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"under your thumb" --- Nobody ever protests. He has the whole group under his thumb. 어떤 사람이 당신에게 지배당하거나 영향을 받을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

HAIR

"bad hair day" --- What's wrong with Jenny? Is she having a bad hair day? 머리손질이 안 된 경우에 유머스러운 표현이었으나  모든 것이 잘못 된 것 같은 날을 의미할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hair of the dog" --- Here, have a drop of this. It's a hair of the dog that bit you! 술에 취한 사람이 회복하는데 한 방울의 알코올처럼 사람을 아프게 하는 아주 작은 양의 치료법을 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"by a hair's breadth" --- A slate fell off the roof and missed the child by a hair's breadth. 위험한 순간을 모면한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"get in someone's hair" --- I'd finish the report more quickly if my colleague wasn't getting in my hair all the time. 당신이 상대방에게 하는 일을 할 수 없을 정도로 짜증나게 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"let your hair down" --- Come on! We're not in the office now. You can let your hair down. 상대방에게 긴장하지 말고 즐기라고 말을 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"makes your hair stand on end" --- Just the thought of getting on a plane makes my hair stand on end. 무언가에 두려움을 느끼고 있을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(not/never) a hair out of place" --- Angela is always impeccably dressed - never a hair out of place. 용모(외모)가 흠잡을 곳 없이 완벽한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"tear one's hair out" ---I've been tearing my hair out all morning trying to find the error.  무언가에 대해 극도로 동요하거나 괴로워하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"(not) turn a hair" --- When the police came to arrest him, he didn't turn a hair. 반응이 있어야 할 환경에서 전혀 감정을 드러내지 않는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"split hairs" --- If we start splitting hairs, we'll never reach an agreement. 중요하지 않은 사소한 차이에 대해서 너므 많은 관심을 집중하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

HANDS

"on hand" --- Extra pillows and blankets are on hand if needed. 재고가 있어 언제든지 팔 수 있는 경우에 사용합니다.

"hand in glove" --- After the match, it was discovered that he was hand in glove with the referee. 공모하거나 일을 하는 밀접한 관계에 있는 2명 이상의 사람들이라고 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hand in hand" --- In big cities, poverty and violence often go hand in hand. 연관되어 있거나 종종 같은 일이 발생하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hand it to someone" --- You've got to hand it to Sophie. She may be a snob, but her presentations are always excellent. 아마도 예기치 않게 상대방에게 자신의 업적에 대해 칭찬이나 칭찬을 받을 자격이 있음을 인정하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"hand (to someone) on a platter/plate" --- Donald was appointed sales director in his father's company. The job was handed to him on a platter. 어떤 일을 획득하는데 별다른 노력없이 쉽게 얻는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"bite the hand that feeds you" --- If you say bad things about the person who gives you a job, you bite the hand that feeds you. 본인에게 잘해 주는 사람에게 해를 끼치거나 불친절하게 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(at) first hand" --- Getting to see the performance (at) first hand is much better than watching it on television. 조력자없이 스스로 직접 경험한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"force someone's hand" --- The interviewer forced Brad's hand and made him reveal his relocation plans. 계획한 것보다 예기치 않게 바로 어떤 일을 하게 되는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have a free hand" --- My boss gave me a free hand in the choice of agent. 스스로 결정할 수 있는 권한을 부여받았을 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"get out of hand" --- During the student demonstration, things got out of hand and several shop windows were broken. 더 이상 통제하기 어려운 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"heavy hand" --- He ran the juvenile delinquent centre with a heavy hand. 감수성이 거의 또는 전혀없이 규율과 엄격하게 행동할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"iron hand/fist in a velvet glove" --- To impose the necessary reforms, the leader used persuasion followed by force - an iron hand in a velvet glove. 부드러움의 배후에 융통성이 없고 단호한 사람을 묘사할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" ---The contradictory emails I've gotten from that company lead me to believe that left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. 그룹이나 조직에서 한 사람의 일을 다른 사람이 전혀 모르고 있는 상황을 표현할때 사용합니다.

"like the back of one's hand" --- Of course I won't get lost. I know London like the back of my hand. 매우 잘 알고 또 익숙한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"live from hand to mouth" --- Most families in that area live from hand to mouth. 먹고 살기 바빠서 돈을 모을 수가 없는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.
