Go, Play and Do

일반적으로 취미나 관심사에 대해 사용하는 3개의 동사(go, play and do)가 있습니다. 혼동하거나 혼용해서 사용할 수 있는데 다음의 법칙에 따라 사용하시면 됩니다.

go + activity --- Examples: go swimming, go fishing, go picnic

play + sport/ game --- Examples: play football, play chess, play footy

do + hobby/ activity (which is not a team sport) --- Examples: do DIY, do gardening, do karate

Exercise - 동사를 넣어 보세요.

What do you do in your spare time?
I like ______ basketball.
I also _______ running twice a week and in summer I ______ tennis.

Have you got any other interests?
I _____ some yoga, and _____ cards with friends.

They’re quite rich. They _____ skiing every winter.

Verbs With “En”

많은 영어 동사들이 어두에는 접두사로 어미에 접미사로 en___, ____en을 붙혀 의미를 변경시켜 사용합니다.

 

Verbs ending with ‘en’ - 접미사인 경우
threaten make threats strengthen make stronger
darken make darker weaken make weaker
lighten make lighter lengthen make longer
brighten make brighter shorten make shorter
freshen make fresher deepen make deeper
deafen make deaf widen make wider
soften make softer broaden  make broader
sweeten make sweeter loosen make looser
sharpen make sharp frighten make someone afraid



Exercise 1

Choose one of the verbs to fill the gaps in the sentences.

1. You can’t ——– me with punishment – I’m too old for that now!

2. I’ll need to ——– this skirt – it’s too long.

3. ——– the butter, then adds the sugar.

4. Don’t ——– the children with ghost stories!

Verbs starting with ‘en’ - 접두사인 경우
enable make something possible enlarge make larger
encircle surround someone or something enlighten make someone understand something
enclose put something inside an envelope enliven make more lively
encourage give someone encouragement enrage make someone angry
encrypt protect information by putting it in code enrich make richer
endanger put someone in danger ensure make sure
endear make yourself dear to someone entrust make someone responsible for something
endure to survive a difficult period for a long time    
enforce make people obey a rule
