숙어의 관용적 표현

ARMS

"arm of the law" --- He fled to South America hoping to escape the arm of the law.  arm of the law 이라는 표현은 법의 권위 또는 권한이 확장되는 범위를 나타낼때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"chance one's arm" ---Tony knew there was little hope of getting into Harvard but he decided to chance his arm anyway.     The population was up in arms over the demolition of the old theatre. 성공할 확률은 낮지만 기회가 되면 뭔가를 시도할 때 쓰는 관용적 표현입니다.

"cost an arm and a leg" ---The new house cost us an arm and a leg, but we have no regrets. 가격이 이 매우 비쌀때 사용합니다.

"give your right arm" --- I'd give my right arm to have an apartment on Central Park. 몹시 갖고 싶은 것이 있을때 어떻게 해서라도 갖고 싶은 마음의 표현입니다.

"up in arms" --- The population was up in arms over the demolition of the old theatre. 발생한 일에 대해 몹시 화가 났을때 쓰는 표현입니다.

"(keep) at arm's length" --- It's not easy to become friends with Sophie; she tends to keep everyone at arm's length.                누군가와 쉽게 친하게 지내지 않는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

 

ELBOW

"more power to your elbow" --- I've left my job and I'm going to work free-lance from now on."  "Well, more power to your elbow. 누군가 어떤 일을 할때 칭찬과 용기를 주시 위해 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(use) use elbow grease" --- It took a considerable amount of elbow grease to renovate the house. 육체적으로 힘든 노동을 할 경우 필요한 에너지와 힘을 표현할때 샤용합니다.

"elbow room" --- We shared a small office where neither of us had enough elbow room. 일을 하거나 움직일때 더 필요한 공간을 표현할때 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

 

BACK

"behind someone's back" --- I bought the car behind his back and now he's really angry. 꼭 내용을 알리고 해야 할 일은 통보없이 하는 것은 실례인 것을 표현할때 사용합니다.

"break your back" --- If you want the job done well, you should accept to pay more. He's not going to break his back for such a low price!  목표를 달성하기위해 부단한 노력을 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"get off my back" --- Liz, please, get off my back! You've been making comments about my work all morning. 당신을  비난하거나 잘못했다고 하는 것을 그만하라고 할때 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"have your back to the wall" --- With his back to the wall, the supplier had to accept the deal. 피할  수  없는 환경에 처했을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep your back covered" --- You'd better make a copy of that letter to keep your back covered. 비판이나  잘못된 비난으로 부터 자신을 보호하기 위해 무언가를 할때 쓰는 표현입니다.

"scratch someone's back" --- If you find a job for my son, I'll vote for me. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. 나를  도와 준다면 나도 도와주겠다는 상부상조의 개념으로 쓰는 표현입니다.

"stab in the back" --- His best friend stabbed him in the back by voting against him. 배신을 당헸을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

BELLY

"go belly up" --- The restaurant went belly up before the end of the first year. 사업이 말하거나 부도가 난 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) belly laugh" --- The comedian hoped that his jokes would produce long belly laughs. 멈출 수 없는 웃음이나 파안대소를 표현할때 사용합니다.

"yellow belly / yellow bellied" --- The bus was full of yellow-bellied passengers who disappeared when the driver was        attacked by two youths. 비겁하거나 정의감이 없는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

STOMACH

"(have) butterflies in your stomach" --- At the beginning of an exam, I always have butterflies in my stomach.  매우 긴장한 경우나 신경이 쓰이는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(have a) cast iron stomach" --- I don't know how you can eat that spicy food. You must have a cast-iron stomach. 어떤 음식이나 음료수도 꺼리낌없이 잘 먹는 사람의 튼튼한 위를 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

BLOOD

"that makes my blood boil" --- His condescending attitude made my blood boil. 화를 나게 만드는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"make your blood run cold" --- The look in the prisoner's eyes made my blood run cold. 무엇인가가 나를 공포와 두려움에 떨게 하는 경우를 표현할때 사용합니다.

"blood, sweat and tears" --- His success wasn't due to luck. It was blood, sweat and tears all the way. 많은  노력과 힘든 일로 이뤄진 것을 표현할때 사용합니다.

 

BODY

"body language" --- He looks calm but his body language reveals a defensive attitude. 의사표현이나 감정을 나타날때 말대신 몸짓으로 표현할때 사용합니다.

"enough to keep body and soul together" --- In my first job I earned just enough to keep body and soul together.                (= from hand to mouth)  사는데 꼭 필요한 정도의 돈만 버는 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"over my dead body" --- Mum, can I get my nose pierced? "Over my dead body." 결코 허락하지 않을 일을 요청하거나 원할때 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

BONES

"bag of bones" --- When he came home from the war he was a bag of bones. 바짝 마른 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have a bone to pick with someone" --- Mark wants to see the boss. He says he's got a bone to pick with him. 누군가에게  짜증이 나서 이야기를 하고 싶을때 하는 표현입니다.

"bone of contention" --- The salaries have been agreed on, but opening on Sundays is still a bone of contention. 동의하거나 인정할 수 없는 문제나 상황에 직면했을때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"make no bones about something" --- I made no bones about it. I told him his offer was unacceptable. 주저함없이  공개적으로나 솔직하게 말할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"throw someone a bone" --- The old man can't help very much but Bill throws him a bone now and then to keep him           happy.  진정한 마음과 자세로 대하면 그 진심을 알게 된다는 표현으로 사용합니다.

"work your fingers to the bone" --- He deserves his success; he worked his fingers to the bone when he started the              business. 열심히 일을 하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.
