BRAIN(S)

"beat one's brains out" ---  My grandmother beats her brains out every evening trying to do the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. 문제를 풀거나 어떤 것을 이해하기 위해 열심인 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"brain like a sieve" --- Oh, I forgot to buy the bread - I've got a brain like a sieve these days. 기억력이 나쁘거나 자주 잊는 경유에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"all brawn and no brain" --- He's an impressive player to watch, but he's all brawn and no brain. 육체적인 힘은 좋으나 머리가 명석하지 않은 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"have something on the brain" ---  Stop talking about golf. You've got golf on the brain.  어떤 것에 몰입하여 생각하고 말을 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"(a) no-brainer" --- The choice was between a cash refund or having the amount credited to my account - it was a no-brainer. I took the cash. 잠시 생각해 보면 쉽게 결론이 나는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"brains behind something" --- The police have arrested a man believed to be the brains behind the bank robbery.  그 사람이 어떤 것을 조직하고 계획한 것으로 짐작하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"pick someone's brains" --- Could we have lunch together? I'd like to pick your brains about something. 특별한 경우(주제)에 대한 설명이나 정보를 얻기 위해 질문하는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"rack one's brains" --- Christmas is always a hassle for me. I have to rack my brains every year to find ideas for presents.  어떤 것에 대해 생각하거나 기옥하기 위해 부단히 노력하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"wrap your brain around something" --- I need a translation of this report urgently, so wrap your brain around it fast. 이해하기 위해 어떤 것에 집중하는 경우에 사용합니다.

 

EARS

"all ears" --- Of course I want to know - I'm all ears. 집중해서 듣고 있다고 말하는 표현입니다.

"fall on deaf ears" --- I told Mark not to take any risks, but  my advice fell on deaf ears. 소귀에 경읽기. 무시당한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"grin from ear to ear" --- When we saw Paul grinning from ear to ear, we knew he had passed the exam.  보기에 매우 만족하거나 행복해 보일때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep your ear to the ground" --- We don't know what has been decided, but Jack is keeping his ear to the ground.

"lend an ear" --- The best person to talk to is Jenny. She's always ready to lend an ear. 매우 신중하고 진심으로 듣는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"make one's ears burn" --- The comments I overheard made my ears burn. 듣게 된 내용이 듣기민망한 경우 특히 본인의 이야기일 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"music to your ears" --- His compliments were music to my ear. 듣게 된 정보로 인해  행복한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"prick up your ears" --- The children pricked up their ears when they heard the word 'ice-cream'.  어떤 말에 갑자기  시선을 집중하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"turn a deaf ear" --- Sam turned a deaf ear to his wife's advice and went off in the rain without an umbrella. 상대방의 조언을 무시하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"play it by ear" --- It's hard to know how the situation will develop. Let's just play it by ear. 상황의 요구에 따라 준비없이 즉흥적으로 행동하거나 행동하는 것에 대한 관용적 표현입니다.

 

FACE

"face like a bulldog chewing a wasp" --- Not only was he rude but he had a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp. 얼굴이 매력적이지도 않고 심술스러운 표정을 갖고 있는 경우에 사용하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"face like thunder" --- When Dad is really angry, he hasa face like thunder. 매우 화난 얼굴이라고 표현할때 사용합니다.

"face like a wet week-end" --- What's wrong with Peter? He's got a face like a wet week-end. 알굴표정이 슬프거나 딱해 보일때 서용하는 표현입니다.

"face only a mother could love" --- The poor guy has a face only a mother could love. 친근하지 않고 심술굿은 사람을 유머있게 표현하는 관용적 표현입니다.

"face that would stop a clock" --- You'll recognize him - he's tall and thin, with a face that would stop a clock. 아주 매력이 없는 얼굴을 가진 사람에 대한 표현입니다.

"face the music" --- He was caught stealing. Now he has to face the music. 본인이 한 행동에 대한 달갑게 받아 들여야만 한다는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"face value" --- The car seems to be in good condition, but don't take it at its face value; get a mechanic to check it out. '보이는 그대로' 라는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"change the face of (something)" --- Social networks have changed the face of modern communication. 완전헤 개념의 변경이나 흐름이 바뀌게 하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"blow up in someone's face" --- He accepted to organise the trip, but it blew up in his face when the airline company went on strike. 게회하거나 계획했던 일이 실패하거나 취소된 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"brave face" --- Even at the worst of times she put on a brave face. 상황이 나쁘지 않은 것처럼 태연하게 보이기 위해 노력하는 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"poker face" --- All during the trial the suspect kept a poker face. 전혀 내색을 하지 않아 어떤 상황인지 알기 어려운 경우에 쓰는 표현입니다.

"save face" --- They allowed him to save face by accepting his resignation. 본인의 자존심과 상대방에 대한 예의를 존중하면서 굴욕과 창피함을 피하고 자 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"keep a straight face" --- Our teacher was dressed so strangely that it was hard to keep a straight face. 웃고 싶지만 심각한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

"two-faced" --- I don't trust Bill. I find him two-faced. 기만하거나 불성실한 경우에 사용하는 표현입니다.

 

CHEEK

"cheek by jowl" --- The refugees are living cheek by jowl in a temporary camp. 좁은 곳에서 불편하게 밀집되어 있는 경우를 말합니다.

"of all the cheek" --- He said my presentation was one of the poorest. Well, of all the cheek. 누군가 말하거나 행동에 대해서 짜증을 내거나 표현할때 사용합니다.

"tongue in cheek" ---  Peter's remark was taken more seriously than intended.  It was supposed to be tongue in cheek. 심각한 것이 아닌 재미있고 묘한 경우에 사용하빈다.

"turn the other cheek" --- Yes, he was very unpleasant, but I took that as unnecessary provocation, so I turned the other cheek. 보복없이 무려함이나 잘못을 받아드릴떼 사용하는 표현입니다.

CHIN

"keep your chin up" --- You didn't win this time but keep your chin up. There will be plenty more occasions. 힘들고 즐겁지 않더라도 쾌활하고 낙천적인을 유지하라고 할때 사용하는 표현입니다.

"take it on the chin" --- When his contract was not renewed, Mark took it on the chin.  과감하게 불편없이 역경, 비난 그리고 패배를 받아 들이는 자세를 나타내는 표현입니다.
